Randers is the capital of Crown Jutland - the former "Åby Syssel" between the towns of Grenaa, Randers, Aarhus and Skanderborg. An area rich in vast estates once owned by the crown, hence the name. The original "Crown Jutlanders" were thus those who lived on the estates, but the term came to generally refer to people from this area in the sense that they were "real Jutlanders".
A river crossing has existed at the place where the Gudenaa River narrows and meets the fjord since ancient times, and which saw the founding of Randers during Viking times, when as early as 1080 Randers became known as a place to trade.
